# Route data credits

Every route file under `public/assets/routes/` is built from **[OpenStreetMap](https://www.openstreetmap.org)** data.

**Route data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License 1.0,
https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright**

These JSON files are a **derived database** of OpenStreetMap (road geometry, built-up stretches, town
names, toll plazas, level crossings, river / rail crossings, fuel stations, ghats). They are offered under
the same **[ODbL 1.0](https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/)**: you may copy, share and adapt
them as long as you credit OpenStreetMap contributors and keep anything you derive from them under the
ODbL. Each file also carries this credit in its own `credit` field and the OSM data date in `osmDate`.

How they were made (`npm run routes:bake -- --all`, `scripts/osm/bake-route.mjs`, definitions in
`scripts/osm/routes.json`): the road geometry is the route from the
[OSRM demo server](https://project-osrm.org) over the OSM road network, Douglas-Peucker simplified at 11 m;
the features come from the [Overpass API](https://overpass-api.de) over OSM. Raw responses are not in git
(raw store `~/chairdrive-assets-src/osm/<id>/`). Names are OSM's own real place, river, ghat and
toll-plaza names; fuel stations never carry a name, and oil-company / fuel-brand, toll-operator and
road-authority words are stripped (`ROUTE_NAME_BLOCKLIST` in `src/game/routeFile.js`). No brand marks.

**Elevation** (`elev`): sampled every 50 m from the
[Terrain Tiles](https://registry.opendata.aws/terrain-tiles/) open dataset on AWS (Mapzen / Linux
Foundation, terrarium PNG, zoom 12), lightly smoothed. Over India these tiles come from **SRTM**
(NASA / USGS, public domain) with other open sources listed in the
[Tilezen attribution notes](https://github.com/tilezen/joerd/blob/master/docs/attribution.md).
